About the STTP

This Short-Term Training Programme (STTP) focuses on colorimetry, ICC color management and process control in print production. With increasing demands for predictable colour reproduction and conformance to international standards, it is essential to move from trial-and-error methods to measurement-based quality assurance. Over three days, the programme will introduce participants to CIE colorimetry, spectrophotometry, ICC profile architecture, device calibration and characterisation, and standards-driven process control. Lectures are complemented by hands-on demonstrations using spectrophotometers, profiling hardware and process control software, enabling participants to directly connect theoretical concepts with practical implementation in their own production or teaching environments.

Thrust Areas

  • Colorimetry & spectrophotometry
  • ICC colour management architecture
  • Display & printer profiling
  • Process control & QA
  • ISO & CRPC-based print standards

Objectives

  • Introduce fundamentals of colorimetry and spectrophotometry for objective evaluation of print and colour reproduction.
  • Develop a clear understanding of ICC color management architecture, including colour dependence/independence, profile types and rendering intents.
  • Equip participants with practical skills in device calibration and characterisation, including display calibration, printer characterisation and ICC profile creation.
  • Demonstrate the use of process control tools and software for monitoring print quality through control strips, TVI, ΔE tolerances and capability indices.
  • Familiarise participants with key international print standards (ISO 3664, ISO 13655, ISO 12647 series, ISO/PAS 15339 CRPCs, ISO 20654) and their application in teaching, research and industrial workflows.

Target Participants

  • Print production managers and supervisors
  • Quality assurance professionals in printing and packaging
  • Faculty members and researchers in Printing / Graphic / Media Technology
  • Postgraduate students and professionals seeking to upgrade skills in colour management and process control
